Information Technology

Between 2000 and 2004, with co-financing from the Royal Government of Bhutan, the Swiss Development Cooperation Agency and Microsoft Corporation, the Foundation managed a joint project to develop technical tools for the integration of support for Dzongkha (the Tibetan script based national language of Bhutan) in Microsoft Windows, using the Unicode standard. The technical developments made during this project played a major role in the integration of support for Tibetan script computing now implemented in Microsoft's Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems and in Microsoft Office and other applications. Since the completion of this joint initiative, support for Tibetan script computing has also been implemented in Apple Mac OS X and Linux operating systems.
